9850X3D vs 9800X3D: The Only Difference Is 400MHz

The short answer: the Ryzen 7 9850X3D and the Ryzen 7 9800X3D are the same eight Zen 5 cores, the same 96MB of L3 cache, the same 120W, the same AM5 socket and the same board and cooler requirements. One line on the specification sheet differs: boost clock, 5.6GHz against 5.2GHz. That 400MHz costs £36.00 on almost every Ginger6 machine that offers both, and £30.00 on the G6 Apex 5 and the G6 Apex 6, where both chips are a step down from the standard processor rather than a step up. Our answer depends on where in the range you are buying. On a Fusion build, take the 9800X3D and put the £36 into the cooler or the motherboard, where you will notice it. On a G6 Apex 4 or above, where a 360mm liquid cooler and a board with onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are already fitted as standard, the difference is noise and the faster chip is worth taking. Every figure below comes from AMD's own published product specification for each processor rather than from our configurator labels, because where the two disagree the manufacturer wins. Read against both datasheets on 30 August 2026.

What is identical is the part you are paying for

The reason anybody buys an X3D processor is the cache. AMD stacks a 64MB die beneath the cores, taking the L3 pool to 96MB and the total to 104MB once the 8MB of L2 is counted, so a game engine finds far more of what it keeps asking for on the chip rather than out in system memory. Both of these processors carry exactly that, in exactly the same amount, on exactly the same eight cores. Whichever one you fit, the mechanism that lifts your frame rate is the same mechanism, working to the same size.

What differs is 400MHz, inside the same 120W

The 9850X3D reaches 5.6GHz where the 9800X3D reaches 5.2GHz, and it does it inside the same 120W power budget and the same 95C temperature ceiling. That is a well-behaved gain rather than a chip pushed harder, and it is worth having for nothing. It is 7.7% more peak clock on paper. Frame rates do not follow clock speed one for one, and the second thing this page has to tell you is how much smaller than 7.7% the real gap turns out to be.

That second difference is worth a sentence of its own. The 9850X3D is the newer part, so it will be in production and on sale for longer, and if resale value is something you think about then it is the one that holds it. That is a real argument. It is not a frame rate argument, and nobody should confuse the two.

The Verdict

The £36 Question, Answered Properly

400MHz on top of 5.2GHz is 7.7% more peak clock. If frame rates scaled with clock speed that would be a real jump, and it would be an easy yes. They do not. A game engine spends much of its time waiting on memory, on the graphics driver and on the graphics card, and clock speed only moves the portion it is not waiting for. On top of that, the boost clock is a ceiling reached on one or two cores at a time under favourable conditions, not a speed the whole chip sits at. The measured gap between these two processors in games lands in low single-digit percentages, and at 1440p or 4K, which is where machines at this price are used, it shrinks again because the graphics card is what sets the pace.

So the honest answer is no, not for almost anybody. You will not see it, you will not feel it, and no frame counter you own will make it obvious. That is the whole finding, and a comparison page that will not say it is wasting your time.

Here is what the same £36 sits next to on our machines. On a G6 Fusion 800 X2 the numbers are clear: £54.00 moves the motherboard from the standard Gigabyte A620M H to a B650M D3HP AX with onboard Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth, and £64.99 fits a 360mm liquid cooler. Neither is £36 exactly: the gap is over half of that cooler and two thirds of that board. But those are things you use every single day, and the 400MHz is not. That is the whole argument for the cheaper chip, and it holds only while there is something better waiting for the money.

Where the 9850X3D is worth taking is a machine from the G6 Apex 4 up, where the cooler is already a 360mm liquid unit, the board already carries onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and there is genuinely nothing better waiting for the money. On the Apex 4 the £36 is 1.4% of the total. Take it there, and go in knowing you are buying a longer production life and a stronger resale position rather than frames.

The Gap Is £36 on Almost Every Machine We Build

Every line is the same machine with only the processor changed in the dropdown. The consistency is useful in itself: whatever you are buying, the decision in front of you is the same £36 decision, so you can settle it once. The G6 Apex 5 and the G6 Apex 6 are the two exceptions, and it is worth understanding why. Both ship with the sixteen-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D, so on either machine both of these chips are a step down from standard rather than up: the 9800X3D saves £192.00 and the 9850X3D saves £162.00, which leaves £30.00 between them instead of £36.00. Same decision, slightly smaller number, and on machines at that level our answer is to take the 9850X3D.

Two more things worth knowing before you go looking. The 9850X3D is not offered at all on the G6 Fusion 600 range or on any of our three custom configurators, so on those machines the 9800X3D is the only one of the pair available and there is no decision to make. And the Fusion 600 X1 will sell you a 9800X3D at £1349.59, which is cheaper than anything above, but it pairs the chip with an RTX 3050 that cannot keep up with it. We would talk you out of that machine on the phone, so we are not going to recommend it here.

Change Nothing

Leave the processor where it is. Buying a chip, taking the cooler off, repasting and reseating it, for a gain measured in low single digits, is the definition of money spent for nothing.

If the machine feels slow, the cause is almost never this. It is the graphics card, the drive, or a memory profile that was never enabled. Ring us and we will help you work out which, whoever built it.

Reader 2: a new build under about £2000

Take the 9800X3D

This is most people. On a Fusion 800 X2 the 9800X3D lands at £1495.99 and the 9850X3D at £1531.99, and on a machine at that level there are two upgrades sitting right next to the £36 that you would genuinely feel.

Spend it on cooling or the board. £64.99 for a 360mm liquid cooler, or £54.00 for a B650M D3HP AX with onboard Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth. Either beats 400MHz you cannot see.

Reader 3: a new build at the top of the range

The 9850X3D Is Worth Taking

This is you if you are buying a G6 Apex 4 or above, where a 360mm liquid cooler and a board with onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are already fitted as standard and the £36 has nowhere better to go. It is 1.4% of an Apex 4.

This is the one place on the page where our answer is yes. Know what you are buying, though: a newer part with a longer production life and a better resale position. Not frames.

The Long Answer

Why 400MHz on the Box Does Not Become 400MHz on the Screen

These two processors are the same design. Same eight Zen 5 cores, same 64MB cache die stacked beneath them, same input and output die, same package, same socket, same power target. What separates them is where each individual chip landed when it was tested at the end of manufacturing. Silicon is not uniform, some chips hold a higher clock at the same voltage than others, and a manufacturer sorts them into products accordingly. The 9850X3D is the higher bin. It is not a redesign, it is not a new generation, and there is no third thing hiding in it that this page has failed to mention.

That matters for what you should expect from it. A boost clock is a ceiling, reached on a small number of cores at a time when temperature, power and workload all allow it. A game does not sit at the ceiling. It moves between cores, waits on the graphics driver, waits on memory, and above all waits on the graphics card, which at 1440p and 4K is doing the overwhelming majority of the work per frame. Raise the ceiling by 7.7% and you raise only the fraction of the frame that was limited by the ceiling in the first place. That is why the measured gap lands in low single-digit percentages rather than anywhere near 7.7%, and why it narrows further the higher your resolution goes.

There is a second reason we keep steering the £36 towards cooling on the cheaper machines, and it is specific to this family of chips. An X3D processor concentrates its heat into a small area, so the number that matters is not the 120W on the datasheet but how quickly a cooler can pull heat out of a small hot spot. A cooler that looks perfectly adequate against 120W can still let the clock speed back off in a warm room or a cramped case, and a chip that has backed off has thrown away considerably more than 400MHz. Buying the higher-binned processor and then leaving it on the standard cooler is the wrong way round. The Apex builds from the Apex 2 up ship with a 360mm liquid cooler as standard for exactly this reason, with no cheaper option in the dropdown, and on the Fusion range that upgrade is £64.99 and worth every penny of it before you look at clock speed.

How a machine is put together decides more of this than which of the two chips is inside it. Every Ginger6 build is assembled by hand in Wolverhampton and cable-managed so the cooler and the graphics card are not fighting each other for air. Memory goes in as a matched pair in dual channel, never a single stick, because a single stick halves the bandwidth the processor has to work with and would cost you far more than the 400MHz this page is about. The memory profile and the BIOS settings are enabled and confirmed on the bench rather than left for you to find. Then the finished machine runs for a full 24 hours under load, which is where a marginal component, an unstable profile or a lazy cooler mount announces itself, rather than on your desk three weeks later.

Yes, exactly the same. Both are AM5 processors running DDR5 memory, both draw 120W, both ship with no cooler in the box and both carry AMD's recommendation for a liquid cooler. Nothing about choosing one over the other changes the board, the memory, the power supply or the cooling. Ginger6 fits A620, B650 and X870 boards depending on the tier, and a 360mm liquid cooler is standard from the Apex 2 upwards and a £64.99 option on the Fusion builds. Because an X3D chip concentrates its heat into a small area, that cooler choice moves sustained clock speed more than the difference between these two processors does.

Neither, in any way that matters. They have the same eight cores and sixteen threads, so the work that splits across cores splits identically on both, and the 400MHz makes about as little difference to an export as it does to a frame rate. For streaming both are comfortable, because modern graphics cards encode the stream themselves. If exporting long timelines or rendering 3D scenes is a regular part of your week, the answer is not either of these chips: it is more cores. The twelve-core Ryzen 9 9900X3D or the sixteen-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D cut those jobs down while gaming at the same speed.

A 360mm liquid cooler is £64.99 and is the single best thing you can do for a 120W X3D chip, because its heat comes out of a small area and a cooler that struggles lets the clock speed back off by far more than 400MHz. Stepping the board up to a Gigabyte B650M D3HP AX with onboard Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth is £54.00. On a G6 Apex 4 or a G6 Sonic FSX3 the cooler and the board are already the good ones, so there is nothing better waiting for the money and we would put it into the 9850X3D. Beyond that, the graphics card decides frame rates at every resolution above 1080p, so if the total can stretch, a bigger card beats any processor decision on this page.
