AM4 vs AM5 for Gaming in 2026: Which Should You Buy?

The short answer: for a new gaming PC in 2026, build on AM5. It uses DDR5 memory, PCIe 5.0, and the current Ryzen 9000 chips including the class-leading Ryzen 7 9800X3D, with years of upgrade path ahead. AM4 is the older socket, but it is not dead: it still makes sense on a tight budget or if you are upgrading an existing AM4 board, where a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D is still a strong gaming CPU. Below is the honest comparison, plus whether a custom AMD gaming PC is the right route for you.

The Key Differences

What is the Difference Between AM4 and AM5?

AM4 and AM5 are AMD's two desktop CPU sockets. Four areas set them apart, and here is what each means for gaming.

Socket & CPU Support

The AM4 and AM5 meaning is simple: they are the two physical CPU sockets on an AMD motherboard. AM4 launched in 2016 and supports Ryzen 1000 through 5000 chips. AM5 arrived in 2022 and takes the current Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 processors, including the X3D gaming chips. The socket you choose decides which CPUs you can fit now and in the future.

Memory: DDR4 vs DDR5

This is the clearest split. AM4 uses DDR4 memory, which is cheap and widely available. AM5 uses DDR5 only, with higher bandwidth that newer game engines make better use of over time. AM5 does not accept DDR4, so a new AM5 build needs DDR5.

PCIe & Connectivity

AM5 boards bring PCIe 5.0 and newer connectivity as standard, ready for the fastest current SSDs and graphics cards. AM4 tops out at PCIe 4.0 on later boards, which is still plenty for gaming today, but AM5 gives more headroom for the next few years.

Upgrade Path & Lifespan

AM5 is the platform with a future. AMD has committed to supporting it with new Ryzen chips for years, so an AM5 build can take a CPU upgrade later without a new motherboard. AM4 is mature and near the end of its road, though it still suits a one-off budget build.

The Case for AM5

Why AM5 Wins for a New Build

If you are building a new AMD gaming PC in 2026, AM5 is the platform to choose. It runs the current Ryzen 9000 chips, uses DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0, and gives you a real upgrade path rather than a dead end. Our G6 Apex 3 is a current AM5 example, built around a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, DDR5 memory and an RTX 5070.

The headline chip is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, an AM5 processor and the fastest gaming CPU on the market thanks to its 3D V-Cache. If you want the strongest gaming performance today, it lives on AM5.

  • Real upgrade path means you can drop in a newer Ryzen chip later without changing the motherboard, so the build stays current for longer.
  • DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 give more memory bandwidth and connectivity headroom for the fastest current SSDs and graphics cards.
  • The best gaming CPUs live here, including the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the fastest gaming processor you can buy in 2026.
  • Longer platform life, AMD has committed to supporting AM5 with new chips for years, so it is a safer long-term foundation.

The Case for AM4

When AM4 Still Makes Sense

AM4 is older, but it is not finished. Because the boards and DDR4 memory are cheaper and widely available, AM4 is still a smart way to build a capable gaming PC on a tight budget, or to breathe new life into a system you already own.

The standout AM4 gaming chip is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D (and the newer 5700X3D). Both use the same 3D V-Cache technology as the flagship AM5 chips, so they punch well above their price for gaming and remain a brilliant value pick. For a straightforward look at the best value builds, see our best value AMD gaming PC guide.

  • Lower platform cost with cheaper boards and DDR4 memory, freeing up budget for a stronger graphics card.
  • Great for an existing board, dropping a Ryzen 7 5800X3D into an AM4 system you already own is one of the best value upgrades in PC gaming. See our AMD upgrade guide.
  • Still strong at higher resolutions, where the graphics card carries the load and a good AM4 chip keeps pace with newer platforms.
  • The catch, AM4 is near the end of its life, so there is little room to upgrade the CPU further down the line. For a brand-new build, AM5 is the wiser choice.

Straight Answer

Is AM5 Better Than AM4?

For a new build, yes. AM5 is faster on paper, uses newer memory and connectivity, and has a real upgrade path. But for pure gaming at the same price the gap can be small, because a great AM4 chip like the 5800X3D still delivers superb frame rates. The deciding factor is usually your budget and whether you want to upgrade later.

Common Question: Does AM5 Use DDR4?

No. AM5 is DDR5 only, it does not accept DDR4 memory. This trips a lot of people up, because AM4 was DDR4 and many expected AM5 to take either. If you are moving from an AM4 system to AM5, you will need new DDR5 memory, so factor that into the cost. Not sure what your current system uses? Decision Guide

Should You Build on AM4 or AM5?

Answer these three questions and the right platform becomes clear.

Question 1: New or Upgrade

New Build or Existing Board?

Choose AM5 if: you are building from scratch. It is the current platform with the best chips and a real upgrade path.

Choose AM4 if: you already own an AM4 board and want to drop in a faster gaming chip like the 5800X3D.

Question 2: Budget

What is Your Budget?

Choose AM4 if: money is tight. Cheaper boards and DDR4 leave more of the budget for the graphics card.

Choose AM5 if: the budget allows. You get DDR5, PCIe 5.0 and the fastest gaming chips for a bit more outlay.

Question 3: Longevity

How Long Should It Last?

Choose AM5 if: you want to keep the machine current for years and upgrade the CPU later without a new board.

Choose AM4 if: you are happy with a one-off build now and will replace the whole system when the time comes.

FAQ

Common Questions About AM4 vs AM5

For a new gaming PC in 2026, AM5 is the better choice. It uses DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0, runs the current Ryzen 9000 chips including the class-leading Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and has a real upgrade path for years. AM4 is still worth it on a tight budget or when upgrading an existing AM4 board, where a Ryzen 7 5800X3D remains an excellent value gaming CPU. If you are building fresh, choose AM5; if you are upgrading cheaply, AM4 still delivers.

Yes, on paper AM5 is the stronger platform: DDR5 memory, PCIe 5.0, newer Ryzen chips and a longer upgrade path. For pure gaming at the same price the real-world gap can be modest, because a good AM4 chip like the 5800X3D still games superbly. AM5 pulls ahead most on future-proofing and on the fastest chips like the 9800X3D.

AM4 and AM5 are AMD's two desktop CPU sockets. AM4 (from 2016) supports Ryzen 1000 to 5000 chips and DDR4 memory, with PCIe 4.0 on later boards. AM5 (from 2022) supports Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 chips, uses DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0, and has a much longer upgrade path. In short, AM4 is the mature budget platform and AM5 is the current one to build on.

No. AM5 is DDR5 only and does not accept DDR4. This surprises a lot of people because AM4 used DDR4. If you are moving from an AM4 system to AM5, you will need new DDR5 memory, so include that in your budget. There is no AM5 board that takes DDR4.

For the right buyer, yes. AM4 boards and DDR4 memory are cheap and plentiful, so AM4 is still a smart way to build a capable gaming PC on a budget, or to upgrade an existing AM4 system with a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. The one downside is that AM4 is near the end of its life, so there is little room to upgrade the CPU further later. For a brand-new build with headroom to grow, AM5 is the wiser pick.

On AM4, the best gaming CPU is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D (with the newer 5700X3D close behind), both using 3D V-Cache to game well above their price. On AM5, the best is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, currently the fastest gaming processor on the market, with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D a strong value alternative. Both platforms centre their best gaming performance on AMD's X3D chips.

For gaming, yes, the graphics card usually has a bigger impact on frame rates than the choice between AM4 and AM5, especially at 1440p and 4K where the GPU carries the load. That is why a well-configured AM4 system with a strong graphics card can keep pace with a newer platform. Balance matters though, so pair a current graphics card with a capable X3D chip on whichever socket suits your budget.

Yes. Ginger6 builds custom AMD gaming PCs on both AM4 and AM5, and will recommend the right one for how you play and what you spend.
