AMD Ryzen 5 8400F: Specs, Price and What the F Really Costs You
In one paragraph: the Ryzen 5 8400F is six Zen 4 cores and twelve threads at 4.2GHz base and 4.7GHz boost, with 22MB of cache, a 65W power budget, and no graphics built into the chip. The F is what the missing graphics is called, it is the reason the processor is cheap, and in a machine with a real graphics card in it the loss is nothing you will ever meet. This is the processor fitted as standard to eight Ginger6 machines and to all three custom builders, from £1069.99 for a finished PC. It is not the fastest chip on our list and it is not meant to be. Every one is built by hand in Wolverhampton, run under load for a full day, and delivered free to UK mainland addresses.

Four Figures, and One Missing Part
Every number here is AMD's own published specification, checked against the label our processor dropdown carries, which reads AMD Ryzen 5 8400f (6x 4.20/4.70GHz) and agrees with it to the decimal.
The F: no graphics on the chip at all
AMD's specification sheet for this part reads, under Graphics Model, "Discrete Graphics Card Required". There is no small Radeon core on the die, and the letter F is how AMD labels that. It is the single reason the chip is cheaper than its siblings, and in a Ginger6 machine it costs you nothing, because every build we fit it to has a real graphics card in the slot doing all of the drawing. What you give up is the ability to get a picture on screen with the card pulled out, which matters on the day a graphics card fails and on no other day. If that day worries you, say so on the phone and we will point you at a chip that keeps a display output.
Six full Zen 4 cores, twelve threads
All six are proper Zen 4 cores on one piece of silicon, not a mix of full and compact cores, and AMD lists the die at 178mm² with a single package die. Being on one die rather than two has a quiet advantage: there is no hop between core clusters for one core to talk to another, so the latency inside the processor is even. Twelve threads is what keeps a machine civil when a game, a browser, a voice client and a recording tool are all running. Six cores was a hard limit in 2018. It is a comfortable middle in 2026, and the section below is honest about where it stops being one.
22MB of cache, and that is the real compromise
16MB of L3 plus 6MB of L2. Cache is fast memory sitting on the processor itself, and this is where the 8400F gives ground rather than on cores or clock speed: a Ryzen 5 from the 7000 or 9000 desktop families carries 32MB of L3, twice as much. That gap shows up in the games that ask the processor for the same small pieces of world state thousands of times a second, and it does not show up anywhere else. Nobody mentions it in the marketing, so we are mentioning it here. It is the honest cost of the price, and further down this page it decides two of the three recommendations we make against this chip.
65W, AM5, DDR5, PCIe 4.0
TDP is the heat the cooler has to move, and 65W is little enough that the standard cooler on a Fusion build holds the rated clocks without the fans announcing themselves. AMD publishes a maximum operating temperature of 95C and a configurable power range of 45W to 65W. The socket is AM5 with DDR5 memory in two channels, so a future processor swap is a chip and a firmware update rather than a new motherboard. The graphics slot runs at PCIe 4.0 x8 rather than PCIe 5.0 x16. AMD publishes twenty native lanes with sixteen usable across the whole chip, and Gigabyte's datasheet for the A620M H board we fit states PCIe 4.0 x8 mode for Phoenix processors, with the rest of the lanes going to the NVMe drive. On a card that only uses eight lanes itself, such as the RTX 5060 or the RTX 5060 Ti, the effect is negligible. On a card that wants all sixteen it is a real consideration rather than nothing, and worth raising with us before you order.
Eight Machines, One Processor, and Only the Card Changes
This is the fact that makes the 8400F worth a page of its own. It is not an upgrade you pick out of a list. It is the chip already inside most of the machines we sell between £1069.99 and £1289.99, which is the band most Ginger6 customers buy in. Across those eight builds the processor, the board, the memory and the drive are the same. The graphics card is the whole difference, and so is the price.

Read the right-hand column, not the left. £220.00 separates the top of that table from the bottom, and every penny of it is graphics card. Nothing else moves: the same six-core 8400F, the same Gigabyte A620M H board, the same 16GB DDR5 5200MHz (2x8GB) Dual Channel, the same 1TB M.2 NVMe drive, the same Windows 11 Home, Wi-Fi via the included USB adapter on all of them. If you are weighing two of these machines against each other, you are choosing a graphics card and nothing else, which is a far easier decision than it looked.
That is also why the processor is the same on all eight. We fit the 8400F as the default because at these price points the card is what you will feel and the chip is not what you are waiting for. Money moved from the graphics card into the processor at this end of the range buys a number you cannot see. Money moved the other way changes every frame. The three custom builders start from the same chip for the same reason: the AMD custom PC builder and the Ryzen 7000 builder open at £1039.99 with an 8400F in them, and the Workstation builder at £1054.99.
One caveat on the G6 ND 1000. It is a pre-built machine held ready for next-day dispatch, so it has no processor dropdown at all. If you want a different chip you want one of the Fusion builds instead, which are made to order.
Where Six Zen 4 Cores Run Out of Road
A processor is never fast or slow by itself. The only question worth asking is whether it is the part you are waiting for, and for the machines this chip goes into the answer is usually no. At 1080p on an RTX 3050, an RTX 5050, an RX 7600 or an RTX 5060, the card is still drawing long after the six cores have finished their share of the frame. Put a £300 processor in that machine and the frame rate barely moves, because the thing setting it was never the processor.
There are four places where that stops being true, and they are worth naming precisely rather than hedging.
One: playing and broadcasting at the same time, with the encoding done on the processor. If a graphics card handles the broadcast, which is how nearly everyone streams now, six cores cope. If you have set the encoder to run on the processor at a high bitrate, six cores is thin and you will see it in the game rather than in the stream.
Two: work that scales with core count. Video exports, 3D renders, long compiles, batches of raw photographs, several virtual machines. These jobs use every core you give them and finish sooner with more. No clock speed makes up for the missing pair.
Three: the games that live on cache rather than on cores. Competitive shooters chased to very high frame rates, flight and racing simulators, and strategy campaigns three hours in are all built on thousands of tiny repeated lookups, and 16MB of L3 runs short where 96MB would not. That is a cache problem, not a core-count problem, and the fix is a different chip rather than a bigger one.
Four: a graphics card well above this class. Fit an RTX 5070 Ti or better and the card finishes its work fast enough that the processor becomes the thing holding the frame up. We do not build the 8400F into machines like that, and if you are configuring one yourself, do not either.
If none of those four describe your week, the honest position is that six Zen 4 cores are enough and the argument is over. Most people who land on this page from a Fusion 600 listing are in exactly that position, and they should stop worrying about the processor and go and choose a graphics card.

All four carry the 8400F as standard with nothing to add to the price, and all four were in stock with a live add-to-cart button on the day this was written. They are ordered by what they are for rather than by price.
There is a cheaper way to own this chip, and it is fine
Unusually for one of these pages, the cheapest route to the 8400F is not a machine we would argue you out of. The AMD custom PC builder and the Ryzen 7000 builder both open at £1039.99 with this processor already in them, and the Workstation builder at £1054.99, so you can start £30.00 below the Fusion 600 X1 and choose the case, the drive, the memory and the cooler yourself.
The catch is only that you have to know what you want. A builder will let you assemble a machine with the money in the wrong place, and the Fusion builds exist because we have already had that argument with ourselves on your behalf. If you are new to this, take a Fusion. If you have done it before, the builder will save you money and give you a better machine.
The 8400F can also be fitted to a G6 Fusion 800 build, where it is a £60.00 reduction rather than an upgrade and takes the Fusion 800 X2 down to £1219.99. Three People Who Should Spend the Extra
The 8400F is the default on eight machines, so most of the orders that come through carry it. Here are the three cases where we move people off it, with what each one costs on a G6 Fusion 600 build.
You Multitask Hard, or You Stream
Two more cores and four more threads is a real step and this is the cheapest place in the range to take it. The Ryzen 7 8700F is the same Zen 4 generation, the same 65W and the same socket, with eight cores instead of six and a 5.0GHz boost instead of 4.7GHz. On a G6 Fusion 600 X1 it takes the machine to £1133.59.
Take it if: you record or broadcast while you play, you keep heavy applications open behind the game, or the PC has a second job in the evenings. This one is worth the money and we say so.
Frame Rate Is the Whole Point
If the machine exists to play games and nothing else, cache beats cores and it is not close. The Ryzen 5 7500X3D is also six cores, clocks lower than the 8400F, and carries 96MB of L3 against this chip's 16MB. On a Fusion 600 X1 it is £1153.99 and on a G6 Fusion 800 X2 it is £1300.65.
Take it if: you play competitive shooters at high refresh, you sit in a sim rig, or your favourite game is a strategy title that thickens by the hour. Those are precisely the games the 16MB of cache runs short in.
You Want the Machine to Age Well
The 8400F is a Zen 4 part on PCIe 4.0, one generation behind what AMD sells new. The Ryzen 5 9600X is the same six cores on Zen 5 with double the L3 cache, a 5.4GHz boost and PCIe 5.0, and on a Fusion 600 X1 it is £1115.41.
Take it if: you want the newer architecture and the faster graphics slot for the card that goes in three years from now. Leave it if: paying for it means a smaller graphics card today, because that trade is a clear loss.
A fourth case, and it is the most common of all. If the money for any of those three would come out of the graphics card, do not spend it. On a machine in this band the card sets your frame rate and the processor does not, so £84.00 moved from the chip to the card is the single best decision available on this page. The Ryzen 7 8700F is the same Zen 4 generation on the same socket at the same 65W, with eight cores instead of six, sixteen threads instead of twelve and a 5.0GHz boost instead of 4.7GHz, and it is a £63.60 step on any G6 Fusion 600 build, which puts the Fusion 600 X1 at £1133.59. If the machine only plays games at 1080p on a mainstream card, the two chips will feel the same and the money belongs in the graphics card instead. Bear in mind that every G6 Fusion 800 build already ships with the 8700F at no extra cost, starting at £1279.99.
Yes, and that is one of the better arguments for the chip. It sits on AM5 with DDR5 memory, the socket AMD has committed to for years yet, so a later processor is a chip and a firmware update rather than a new motherboard, new memory and a rebuild. The Gigabyte A620M H board fitted to a Fusion build takes the whole current AMD range. Two honest limits. The graphics slot runs at PCIe 4.0 x8 rather than PCIe 5.0 x16, which is negligible on a card that only uses eight lanes itself, such as the RTX 5060 or the RTX 5060 Ti, a real consideration on a card that wants all sixteen, and a ceiling on the fastest new drives either way. And a very large processor deserves better cooling than the standard air cooler, so a 240mm liquid cooler at £51.00 or a 360mm at £64.99 is worth adding at build time rather than later.
The warranty runs for three years, and a longer parts option can be added at checkout.
