What Zen 4 Brought, and What It Cost
Ryzen 7000 was a platform change rather than a chip refresh. Four things arrived with it, and the fourth is the one worth understanding before you spend anything.
Zen 4 cores built on 5nm
AMD moved the compute dies to a TSMC 5nm process with a 6nm input and output die alongside them, and clock speeds went up sharply as a result. Seven of the eight chips on this page reach 5GHz or more, topping out at 5.6GHz on the Ryzen 9 7900X. Zen 4 is a full architecture rather than a refresh of the one before it, and it is the reason a four-year-old chip still keeps up with a modern graphics card.
DDR5 memory and the AM5 socket
Ryzen 7000 is where AMD moved to DDR5 and to a socket it is still shipping new processors on today. Every chip here drops into the same AM5 boards as the current generation, which means a Ryzen 7000 machine is not a dead end: the processor can be changed later without changing the motherboard or the memory. PCIe 5.0 on every chip
Every processor here carries PCIe 5.0, so the graphics slot and the primary NVMe drive sit on the current standard rather than the previous one. In practice that matters less for graphics cards, which are nowhere near saturating the older standard, and more for fast storage. It is one fewer reason to pay for a newer generation.
3D V-Cache, stacked on top of the cores
This is the generation that brought stacked cache to AM5 and DDR5, after the Ryzen 7 5800X3D brought it to the desktop on the older AM4 socket in April 2022, a month after AMD shipped the same stacking on its EPYC Milan-X server processors, and the detail everybody skips is where AMD put it. On Ryzen 7000 the extra 64MB sits directly on top of the compute die, between the cores and the metal lid. It worked, and it is why an eight-core 7800X3D outruns processors with twice the cores in games. It also acts as a blanket over the hottest part of the chip, so AMD held the voltage and the clock ceiling lower to keep it inside its thermal limits. The cost is visible in AMD's own figures, below.

Ordered by what each one costs rather than by model number, because that is the order you will make the decision in. The final column is that processor fitted to the G6 Fusion 800 X2, the machine we price every generation in so the tables stay comparable.
Cores are listed as cores and threads. Cache is the total of L2 and L3 on the chip. Core counts, clock speeds and cache figures are AMD's published specifications. Ten Machines Ship With a Ryzen 7000 Chip as Standard
This is what separates Ryzen 7000 from a legacy part here. These are not upgrades bolted onto something newer, they are the processors already in the build, across the band where most Ginger6 machines are sold.
One oddity on the Fusion 1200 is worth knowing before you order. Swapping the standard Ryzen 9 7900 for the eight-core Ryzen 7 7800X3D costs £1.20 on any of the six builds. Twelve cores without stacked cache, or eight cores with it, for the price of a packet of crisps. If the machine is for games, take the 7800X3D. If it renders or encodes for a living, keep the 7900. Buying Ryzen 7000 in 2026 Is a Decision, Not a Compromise
Let us be straight about the position. Ryzen 7000 is one generation back. The socket it uses is current, the memory it uses is current, the PCIe generation is current. What you give up against Ryzen 9000 is a mid-teens percentage of instructions per clock in work that keeps every core busy, some efficiency at the low end, and the higher clock speeds that the redesigned cache allowed. What you get back is price. On the same G6 Fusion 800 X2, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is £1403.59 and the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is £1495.99. That is a £92.40 gap between a chip that is a step ahead in games and one that is still, three years after it launched, quicker in games than most processors sold today. Nobody should feel talked into the older one. They should be able to see the trade and pick.
Some people should not buy this generation, and here is who. If the machine has to be right for the next five or six years and the budget can carry it, buy Ryzen 9000: that is the generation AMD is still adding parts to, and the newest X3D chips clock higher because the cache sits beneath the cores rather than over them. Those are real reasons and we are not going to pretend otherwise to move older stock.
Most people should also stop climbing this page before the bottom of the table. If you play at 1080p or high refresh 1440p with a graphics card up to an RTX 5060 Ti, the Ryzen 5 7500X3D at £1300.65 will not hold that card back, and the £102.94 saved against the 7800X3D belongs in the graphics card instead. If you never open a render queue, the twelve-core Ryzen 9 7900X is £1416.79 spent on cores that will sit idle while you play. Cores are for work that splits into pieces. Cache is for frames. Being honest with yourself about which of those you need is worth more than any benchmark chart.
There is also a cheaper way to buy every chip on this page, and it is usually the wrong buy. That is a gaming processor at the front of the range with a graphics card at the back of it, and it will be slower in every game than the same money arranged the other way round. We will tell you first that the Fusion 800 X2 at £1403.59 is the better machine for £147.60 more, and that if that is out of reach the honest answer is a cheaper processor rather than a cheaper card.
Building one properly matters as much as choosing one. Memory goes in as a matched pair in dual channel, never a single stick, because one stick halves the bandwidth the processor has to work with, and the profile is enabled and confirmed on the bench rather than left for you to find later. Cooling matters more than the wattage suggests on the X3D parts, because they concentrate heat in a small area: the Apex 2 and up ship with 360mm liquid cooling as standard, while the Apex 1 and the Fusion builds run a standard cooler with a 360mm upgrade at £64.99 if you want one. The Fusion range and the Apex 1 use a Gigabyte A620M board with Wi-Fi via the included USB adapter, and step up to a B650M D3HP AX for £54.00 if you would rather have Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth onboard. Then the machine runs 24 hours under load in Wolverhampton, which is where a marginal chip or a lazy cooler mount announces itself rather than on your desk three weeks later.

Ryzen 7000 is AMD's generation of desktop processors built on the Zen 4 architecture, launched from late 2022 onwards. Every Ryzen 7000 chip is an AM5 part running DDR5 memory in dual channel, which is the same socket and the same memory standard as the current Ryzen 9000 generation. A Ryzen 7000 machine can therefore take a newer processor later with a BIOS update rather than a new motherboard.
