Component Detail

Why Each Component Was Chosen

Every component in this build was selected specifically for flight simulation workloads, not just gaming in general. Compare the choices with other Flight Sim builds in the range if you want context on tier differences. Here’s what each part does and why it matters for sim performance.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D: Processor
The 9800X3D is the best gaming CPU available in 2026, and it is particularly well-suited to flight simulation. Its 3D V-Cache technology stacks an extra layer of fast cache directly on the CPU die, which helps enormously with scenery streaming, the primary CPU bottleneck in simulators like MSFS 2024. The 9800X3D has 8 cores, 16 threads, boosts to 5.2 GHz, and consistently outperforms Intel equivalents in single-threaded sim workloads. Upgradeable to the Ryzen 9 9900X3D or 9950X3D for even more multi-threaded headroom.
NVIDIA RTX 5070 12GB: Graphics Card
The RTX 5070 is the sweet spot for flight sim performance in 2026. 12GB of VRAM handles high-resolution textures, complex scenery, and orthophoto add-ons without running out of memory. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation is particularly valuable in flight sim, it can more than double your frame rate in visually complex areas at minimal quality cost. For VR flight sim, the 5070 delivers consistent frame rates with enough headroom for reprojection to stay smooth. Upgradeable to the RTX 5070 Ti, 5080, or 5090; if you want flagship 4K headroom from day one, the G6 Sonic FSX6 with an RTX 5090 32GB is the next step up in the range.
2 × 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD: Dual Storage
Dual NVMe drives are standard on this build rather than a single larger drive, and there is a good reason for that. Running your operating system and simulator on one drive while storing your add-ons, scenery, and liveries on a second dedicated drive significantly reduces load times and prevents conflicts between large add-on packages. MSFS 2024 and X-Plane both benefit from the faster random read speeds of separate NVMe drives when streaming scenery in real time. The board supports up to 4 NVMe drives, configurable above.
32GB Kingston Fury DDR5 5200MHz: Memory
32GB of DDR5 RAM is the recommended minimum for serious flight simulation in 2026. MSFS 2024 regularly uses 24–28GB in complex scenery with heavy add-on loading, and X-Plane with ortho scenery can approach similar usage. Kingston Fury DDR5 at 5200MHz arrives as a 2x16GB dual-channel memory kit, which gives the 9800X3D platform the bandwidth it is designed for. Upgradeable to a 64GB (2x32GB) or 128GB (2x64GB) dual-channel kit for users running particularly demanding add-on packages or multi-monitor setups.
Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX: Motherboard
The B650 Eagle AX provides a solid AM5 platform for the 9800X3D with built-in Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth, eight USB ports, Gigabit LAN, and a USB Type-C front header. It supports DDR5 memory up to high speeds and has multiple M.2 slots for the dual NVMe storage configuration. For flight sim users who want even more connectivity, the board is upgradeable to the X870 Eagle or X870 Aorus Elite with Wi-Fi 7 and dual USB4 Type-C ports, both available above.
360mm AIO Liquid Cooler: Processor Cooling
The 9800X3D runs warm under the sustained workloads that flight simulation places on a CPU, particularly in dense scenery areas or when running AI traffic and weather systems simultaneously. A 360mm AIO provides the thermal headroom needed to keep the processor running at full boost throughout long flights without throttling. ARGB fans are included as standard. Corsair Nautilus 360 options are available if you prefer a branded cooler.
750W 80+ Bronze PSU: Power Supply
The 750W unit provides adequate headroom for the base configuration of this build with room to spare. If you upgrade to an RTX 5080 or 5090, we recommend upgrading to the 850W or 1000W Corsair Gold unit to maintain safe headroom. You can configure this above. All PSUs used in Ginger6 builds are from established manufacturers. Budget PSUs are one of the most common failure points in self-builds, and we do not use them.
Connectivity: Ports & Networking
The B650 Eagle AX provides 2 USB 2.0 ports, 4 USB 3.0 ports, 1 Gigabit LAN port, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth as standard. This matters for flight sim users with multiple USB peripherals such as yokes, throttle quadrants, rudder pedals, and headsets. The single HDMI and three DisplayPort outputs support multi-monitor setups directly. If you run more than four USB devices simultaneously, we recommend adding a 4-port USB 3.0 expansion card via the PCI-E Slot 2 option above.

Why This Build

Built Specifically for Flight Simulation

Flight simulation is one of the most hardware-intensive PC workloads available. These are the specific reasons this configuration was put together for sim pilots, not general gaming.

3D V-Cache for Scenery Streaming

The 9800X3D’s extra cache layer dramatically reduces stuttering when the sim loads new terrain tiles, photogrammetry, and AI traffic. This is the most impactful upgrade you can make for MSFS 2024 performance.

12GB VRAM for High-Res Textures

Add-on airports, ortho scenery, and high-resolution aircraft liveries consume significant VRAM. 12GB provides comfortable headroom for complex scenery without texture pop-in or performance degradation.

Dual NVMe for Add-On Storage

A dedicated second NVMe drive for scenery, add-ons, and liveries keeps your OS drive clean and reduces I/O conflicts during long flights. Faster load times and fewer stutters during terrain transitions.

VR and Multi-Monitor Ready

The RTX 5070 drives VR headsets and wide multi-monitor setups without frame rate compromise. Three DisplayPort outputs support triple monitor configurations directly from the GPU.

Sim Setup Support Included

We don’t just build and ship. Call Kevin after delivery and he’ll help with graphics settings, controller configuration, add-on installation, and performance optimisation for your specific simulator.

Upgradeable from Day One

The AM5 platform, multiple M.2 slots, and headroom in the PSU make this a machine you can grow with. Add more storage as your add-on library grows, upgrade the GPU when the next generation arrives. For an entry-tier alternative, see the FSX1 and FSX2 at lower price points.

Simulator Compatibility

What Will It Run, and How Well?

The G6 Sonic FSX3 is configured for serious performance across all major flight simulators.

Commercial aircraft in flight
Primary Use Case
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024

MSFS 2024 is the most demanding simulator available and the primary target for this build. The 9800X3D’s V-Cache handles scenery tile streaming, the RTX 5070 pushes Ultra settings at 1440p or high settings at 4K, and 32GB of DDR5 prevents memory bottlenecks when running complex aircraft systems, AI traffic, and real-time weather simultaneously. DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation significantly boosts frame rates in demanding areas such as photogrammetry cities and complex approach procedures.

Aircraft cockpit view
Also Optimised For
X-Plane 12

X-Plane 12’s Vulkan renderer is highly GPU-dependent. The RTX 5070 delivers strong performance with orthophoto scenery packages, and the dual NVMe configuration handles the large file sizes of ortho tiles without I/O stuttering.

Military aircraft
Combat Simulation
DCS World

DCS World places heavy demands on both CPU and GPU, particularly in multiplayer missions and VR. The 9800X3D’s single-thread performance and the RTX 5070’s VRAM headroom keep frame rates consistent through complex combat scenarios and high-density maps.

Cockpit instruments
Classic Simulation
Prepar3D & FSX

Prepar3D and FSX are single-threaded legacy simulators that benefit enormously from the 9800X3D’s high single-core boost clock. These simulators run better on this hardware than on newer multi-core CPUs with lower individual core speeds.

FAQ

Questions About the G6 Sonic FSX3

At 1440p, yes. Ultra settings in MSFS 2024 are achievable with the RTX 5070 and 9800X3D combination, particularly with DLSS 4 enabled. At 4K, High settings with DLSS 4 Quality will deliver smooth frame rates. The actual performance depends heavily on scenery, AI traffic, and weather settings. Call Kevin if you want a frank assessment for your specific setup.
Yes. The RTX 5070 is capable of running MSFS 2024 in VR at good quality settings. VR performance depends on headset resolution, the aircraft you fly, and how demanding your scenery is. Dense photogrammetry areas will push the hardware harder than rural flying. For VR, we generally recommend upgrading to the RTX 5070 Ti or higher for a more comfortable headroom. Call Kevin with your headset model and flying habits and he will advise on the right GPU for your use case.
Flight simulators with large add-on libraries benefit from separating the OS and simulator installation from the add-on and scenery storage. Running your sim on one NVMe drive and your Orbx scenery, payware airports, and liveries on a second dedicated drive reduces I/O conflicts, speeds up loading times, and makes it easier to manage your add-on library. Modern flight sims regularly require 200–500GB of storage for a fully equipped setup. Dual NVMe gives you that space efficiently.
The base configuration provides 6 USB ports via the motherboard (2 x USB 2.0, 4 x USB 3.0) plus front panel headers. For a fully equipped flight sim setup with a yoke, throttle, rudder pedals, headset, and additional hardware, we recommend adding the 4-port USB 3.0 expansion card available in the PCI-E Slot 2 option above, or using a powered USB hub.
Yes. The AM5 socket, multiple M.2 slots, and headroom in the PSU all support future upgrades. If you prefer to step up to the next tier today, the G6 Sonic FSX4 (RTX 5070 Ti) or FSX5 (RTX 5080) give you the headroom built in. Adding more storage is straightforward. GPU upgrades are supported by the current PSU up to the RTX 5070 Ti; upgrading to an RTX 5080 or 5090 would also require a PSU upgrade. Call Kevin when you are ready to upgrade and he will advise on the right path for your specific machine.
The standard Bronze warranty covers 1 year of parts and labour plus 2 additional years of labour-only cover. The Silver option extends parts and labour cover to 2 years. The Gold option provides full parts and labour cover for all 3 years, giving complete peace of mind for the lifetime of the warranty. All options include lifetime free UK phone support. For a machine of this specification, Gold cover is worth considering.
