What the Numbers Mean

Is the i9-13900K Good for Gaming?

Yes. The i9-13900K is a top-tier gaming CPU, and comfortably more than any game needs on its own. Its 8 performance cores boost to 5.8 GHz for the high single-thread speed that drives frame rates, and the huge 36MB of L3 cache keeps frame times smooth. The 16 efficiency cores mean it never breaks stride when you stream, record or run heavy apps alongside the game.

The trade-off is power and heat: at up to 253W maximum turbo power, the 13900K runs hot under sustained load, so it needs serious cooling: a 280mm or 360mm AIO is the sensible pairing, and every Ginger6 i9 build ships with cooling to match. It sits on the LGA1700 platform and supports both DDR4 and DDR5.

For pure gaming the 13900K is overkill unless you also stream, edit video or render: that’s where its 24 cores earn their keep. If you want a do-everything machine for 4K high-refresh gaming plus content creation, it’s a superb chip. Pair it with a strong graphics card and it will play and create anything.

Where It Fits in 2026

The 13900K Today: and What Replaced It

The i9-13900K is still a genuinely fast gaming and workstation CPU, but it has since been superseded, worth knowing if you’re buying new in 2026.

Buying new? Go Core Ultra 9 285K

We no longer build systems around the 13900K. For a new Intel flagship build in 2026 the current top chip is the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, 24 cores boosting to 5.7 GHz on Intel’s newer, longer-lived LGA1851 platform, running cooler and more efficiently than the 13900K. It’s the chip we’d steer you to today. (Between the two came the i9-14900K: 24 cores / 32 threads up to 6.0 GHz on LGA1700, and the last processor to carry the “i9” name.) The 13900K is still a strong performer if you already own a compatible LGA1700 board or are upgrading within one, but for a fresh build, the Core Ultra 9 285K is the smarter buy. Our G6 Genesis U3 pairs the Core Ultra 9 285K with an RTX 5070 Ti; or browse the full Core Ultra 9 range.

FAQ

Common Questions About the i9-13900K

The Intel Core i9-13900K has 24 cores and 32 threads. The 24 cores are split into 8 performance (P) cores and 16 efficiency (E) cores; only the P-cores support Hyper-Threading, which is how 24 cores provide 32 threads. It’s the flagship Raptor Lake (13th gen) chip on the LGA1700 socket.

The i9-13900K has a Processor Base Power (TDP) of 125W and a Maximum Turbo Power of 253W. That 253W figure is what it can draw at full boost, so it runs hot and needs serious cooling: a 280mm or 360mm AIO is the sensible choice. Every Ginger6 i9 build includes cooling to match as standard.

The i9-13900K uses the Intel LGA1700 socket and works with 600-series (Z690, B660) and 700-series (Z790, B760) motherboards. A Z790 board is the usual match for the flagship. It supports both DDR4-3200 and DDR5-5600 memory depending on the board, and offers PCIe Gen 5 for the graphics card and a fast NVMe SSD.

The Intel Core i9-13900K was released on 20 October 2022 as the flagship of Intel’s 13th-generation Raptor Lake desktop lineup. It has since been succeeded by the i9-14900K (14th gen) and Intel’s current Core Ultra 9 series, though the 13900K remains a capable gaming and creator CPU.

Yes. It’s one of the fastest gaming CPUs of its generation. Its P-cores boost to 5.8 GHz and its 36MB of L3 cache deliver high, consistent frame rates, while the 16 E-cores handle streaming and multitasking. For gaming alone it’s overkill; it earns its keep if you also stream, edit or render. Paired with a strong graphics card it handles 4K high-refresh gaming with ease.

The i9-14900K is the 13900K’s direct successor. It keeps the same 24 cores / 32 threads (8 P + 16 E) but runs at higher clocks, boosting up to 6.0 GHz versus 5.8 GHz. Both use the LGA1700 socket, and the 14900K was the last Intel chip to carry the “i9” name. For a new build in 2026 a Core Ultra 9 is usually the better buy; the 13900K makes sense if you already have a compatible board.

Yes. Ginger6 builds custom Intel i9 gaming PCs around the current i9 and Core Ultra 9 processors. Call Kevin on 01902 714533 and tell him your games, monitor resolution and budget, and he’ll recommend the right CPU and match it to the right graphics card.
