Intel 13th Generation Processors (Raptor Lake)

Intel’s 13th generation Core CPUs, codenamed Raptor Lake, launched on 20 October 2022 (the unlocked K-series and Z790), with the rest of the range following in January 2023. They use the LGA 1700 socket, support DDR4 or DDR5 memory, and run from the 10-core i5-13400 to the 24-core i9-13900K. Here’s the full lineup, release dates, cores and specs, and where 13th gen stands in 2026, from the team who hand-build Intel gaming PCs in Wolverhampton.

The Essentials

Intel 13th Gen at a Glance

The four things people most want to know about Raptor Lake.

Release Date

The unlocked K-series (i5-13600K, i7-13700K, i9-13900K) and the Z790 chipset launched on 20 October 2022. The rest of the range, the non-K chips and the i5-13400, followed in January 2023.

Socket & Chipsets

13th gen uses the LGA 1700 socket, the same as 12th gen, and works with both 600 and 700-series chipsets (B660, Z690, B760 and Z790). That made it an easy drop-in upgrade for many Alder Lake boards.

DDR4 or DDR5

Raptor Lake supports both DDR4 and DDR5 (up to DDR5-5600), with the memory type set by your motherboard rather than the CPU. That flexibility let buyers keep DDR4 for value or move to DDR5 for a new build.

How Old Is It Now?

Launched in 2022, 13th gen is around three to four years old in 2026. It has since been succeeded by 14th gen (Raptor Lake Refresh) and the Core Ultra series, but it remains a strong value choice for a gaming PC.

Where It Stands

Is Intel 13th Gen Still Worth It in 2026?

Yes, for the right buyer. 13th gen has been overtaken by 14th gen (Raptor Lake Refresh) and the newer Core Ultra chips, but that means Raptor Lake is now excellent value. A 13th-gen i5 or i7 still delivers strong 1080p and 1440p gaming in a modern gaming computer, and the mature LGA 1700 platform with DDR4 support keeps a build affordable.

  • Great value now. A 13th-gen i5-13600K remains a superb gaming CPU for the money.
  • Affordable platform. LGA 1700 with the option of DDR4 keeps the overall build cost down.
  • Starting fresh? For a brand-new build, 14th gen or Core Ultra 5 may be the better long-term pick.

FAQ

Common Questions About Intel 13th Gen

Intel's 13th generation (Raptor Lake) launched on 20 October 2022 with the unlocked K-series: the i5-13600K, i7-13700K and i9-13900K, alongside the Z790 chipset. The rest of the range, including the non-K models and the i5-13400, followed at CES in January 2023.

13th gen uses the Intel LGA 1700 socket, the same one as 12th gen, and is compatible with both 600 and 700-series chipsets (such as B660, Z690, B760 and Z790). That made 13th gen an easy upgrade on many existing Alder Lake motherboards after a BIOS update.

Intel 13th gen was released in 2022 (with more models in early 2023), which makes it roughly three to four years old in 2026. It has since been succeeded by 14th gen (Raptor Lake Refresh) and the Core Ultra series, but remains a capable, good-value platform.

It varies by model. The i5-13400 has 10 cores (6 performance + 4 efficiency), and the i5-13600K has 14 cores (6P + 8E). At the top, the i9-13900K has 24 cores (8P + 16E) and 32 threads, while the i7-13700K sits in between with 16 cores (8P + 8E).

Both. Raptor Lake supports DDR4 and DDR5 memory (up to DDR5-5600), and which one you use is decided by your motherboard rather than the CPU. That let buyers keep cheaper DDR4 for a value build or choose DDR5 for maximum bandwidth on a new one.

Yes, especially as a value choice. A 13th-gen i5-13600K or i7-13700K still delivers excellent 1080p and 1440p gaming, and the mature LGA 1700 platform keeps costs down. If you're building brand new and want the longest life, 14th gen or a Core Ultra 5 may be the better long-term pick.

12th gen (Alder Lake) introduced the hybrid P-core and E-core design; 13th gen (Raptor Lake) refined it with more E-cores, more cache and higher clocks; and 14th gen (Raptor Lake Refresh) pushed clocks a little further again. All three share the LGA 1700 socket, so they are closely related generations.

Yes. Ginger6 builds custom Intel gaming PCs, and can advise whether a 13th-gen chip is the best value for your budget or whether a newer generation makes more sense. Call Kevin on 01902 714533 with your games and budget. Every build is assembled by hand in Wolverhampton and stress-tested for 24 hours, backed by a 3-year warranty.
